Dew point
Weather
← All glossary terms
The dew point is the temperature to which air must cool to become saturated. A small spread between temperature and dew point signals a risk of fog, mist or low cloud.
- German term
- Taupunkt
In a METAR, temperature and dew point appear as a pair such as 12/06. As the evening cools, a spread of a few degrees can close quickly, and visibility can drop sharply near sunset or at dawn.
In practice
Watch the trend of the spread over several METARs, especially for evening returns and early-morning departures.
