VMC (visual meteorological conditions)
Airspace & rules
← All glossary terms
VMC are the weather minima — visibility and distance from cloud — under which VFR flight is permitted. In Europe they are defined in SERA.5001 per airspace class.

- VMC
Typical values below FL100 in classes C to E: 5 km flight visibility, 1,500 m horizontally and 1,000 ft vertically from cloud. Class F and G airspace near the ground can have reduced minima under specific conditions.
In practice
Treat VMC minima as legal limits, not targets — set personal minima above them.
