Density altitude
Weather
← All glossary terms
Density altitude is the altitude in the standard atmosphere at which air has the same density as the actual air. High temperature, high elevation and low pressure raise it and reduce aircraft performance.
- German term
- Dichtehöhe
On a hot day at an elevated aerodrome, the engine produces less power, the propeller less thrust and the wing less lift at the same indicated speed. Take-off run and climb rate can worsen considerably.
In practice
Calculate take-off and landing distances with the POH performance tables for the actual temperature and pressure altitude, then add a safety margin.
