QFE (altimeter setting to aerodrome level)

    Weather

    ← All glossary terms

QFE is the pressure setting that makes the altimeter read zero on the runway. With QFE set, the altimeter shows height above the aerodrome.

    Abbr.
    QFE

QFE is used at some aerodromes and by some clubs for circuit flying, because circuit heights can then be read directly. In most of Europe, VFR traffic uses QNH, and published circuit altitudes refer to it.

    In practice

Know which setting the aerodrome expects — mixing QFE and QNH in the circuit causes height errors equal to the field elevation.
